One of the world’s best rose gardens

June is the most wonderful month to visit Mottisfont Abbey. This is the time when the rose garden blooms, bringing beautiful colours and fragrances. The sight is not to be missed and has earned the site a place in the GROW Hall of Fame, becoming one of just a handful in the whole world.

The most impressive thing about Mottisfont’s rose garden is that it is home to the National Collection of old fashioned roses. What this means is that many of the 500 plus varieties are pre-1900 and only bloom once per year. This occurs in June and huge numbers of visitors flock to the site to see them.

The walled rose garden was created in the 1970s by celebrated British horticulturist Graham Stuart Thomas. He used his extensive knowledge and passion for roses to ensure the site would look great all year round. June is the highlight because of the old fashioned roses but perennial varieties are interspersed with them. The effect is very impressive.

With June being such an important month for the garden the opening hours are extended on certain days to allow later entry. That way there is more time for visitors to enjoy the sights and smells as well as the other attractions at Mottisfont.
