The New Forest National Park has the densest population of any UK national park and possesses one of the most beautiful and varied landscapes. It is made up of a fantastic myriad of habitats including wet and dry heaths, ancient woodland, plantations, mixed farmland and coastline. The park is famous for the wildlife you can see here including the free roaming cattle, ponies and various species of deer.
The biggest attraction that keeps people coming back to the New Forest year after year is the amazing number of walks to enjoy. There are trails to suit every skill level so you can enjoy a leisurely wildlife seeing walk with your family or choose something challenging. There are self guided leisure walks ranging from short quarter of a mile trips to those that take you several miles. The routes are circular and designed to be easy. If you are looking for a challenge one of the following walks could be perfect for you.
The Solent Way is one of the longest walks in the whole park as it stretches 60 miles along the coast from Milford-on-Sea to Emsworth. The walk takes in several towns along the way and gives travellers beautiful views for the whole journey. For part of it you can even see the Isle of Wight. The path is split into easy stages as you progress from town to town and take in all of the sights. Everything is clearly signposted so it is a good trip.
The Avon Valley Path is another tough walk, stretching 34 miles from Salisbury in Wiltshire to Christchurch. It follows the path of the river and gives you great things to see for the whole length. There are five sections on the trail taking you through different landscapes along the way. When on the trail there is plenty of wildlife, a huge variety of flora and fauna and a selection of mills, sluice gates and weirs to see.
If you’re feeling more adventurous you can purchase a map and plan your own route from the 30,000 hectares of accessible land. There is a great deal of choice and cyclists are also welcome on many trails.
